Hobby Chapin on 1 Cor. 9:11

In the past few videos we've been talking about a new (actually old) model for financing church planters based on 1 Cor. 9:1-14 with a special emphasis on verse 11. Paul says: "If we've invested in you spiritually, isn't it appropriate for you to invest in us financially?" Implied answer: "Of course."

Hobby Chapin, a church planter in Brighton, CO tells his story of how he has implemented this new way of thinking.

  1. This is a great and very encouraging video. It reminds me of something the Lord told me in prayer several months ago. "I have not called you or others to simply take a vow of poverty - rather, share all you have with your friends and take a vow of community." This 9:11 Question is one that came at the right time for my family and for the network we're a part of.

The hard part comes not just from the rich giving to the poor, or the coachee giving to the coach, but it also works in the reverse. It took courage for John to mention what he sensed was the right thing - to ask for physical investment for the spiritual investment he was making in Hobby's life.

It is odd that only in the church are people expected to do the hard work of leadership training for free. And the church is supposed to be marked with generosity! I am learning to ask myself the 9:11 Question when I receive spiritual investment from others. It is a great way to "take a vow of community."

  2. Sorry it has been a while since I posted. We had a retreat that I facilitated among some other time-consuming things.

The story I shared on this video has become very important to me. I used to be terrified of asking people for money. John's example to me in this has instilled a new confidence in the way I pose this to people. It is not about me and my need, but about seeking the Lord together.

Like I said, this has become a very important principle as I see God's expectation of his community, as I see the needs of a movement, and as I experience the Lord's blessing. We need to model this for others. It takes courage at first. I hope to see our movement take this bold and courageous step of faith with finances. Thanks again John for your leadership.
